A Hat for Dave

apple
Today I finished my last "Christmas Gift" knitting project. I gave several people "Knit4UxMe" gift certificates, and Dave chose a hat. When I asked him for colors and special requests, he asked for a black and red hat with the kanji for "Bushido" (his men's group) on it. Here is the result:

5415 Dave's hat (close) 5416 Dave's Bushido

For kicks, I'm making the pattern available for free on Ravelry. Here's the pattern itself!

Materials:
Worsted-weight yarn: Main color (Wool of the Andes "Coal") (1 skein) and contrast color (Wool of the Andes "red") (much less than 1 skein)
size 6 needles
yarn needle

Cast on 72 stitches in black; use a stretchy cast-on, please.

Ribbing with one red stripe:
Row 1 - 6: k2p2 rib
Row 7: join red (do not break black), knit around
Row 8: slip 1st stitch (to avoid jog), continue in rib pattern in red, break red
Row 9: knit around in black
Row 10: slip 1st stitch, continue in rib pattern in black
Row 11-16: k2p2 rib

Hat time:
Row 17: increase to 80 stitches by (k9, M1) 8 times
Row 18-19: knit around in black
Row 20: join red (do not break black), knit around in red
Row 21: *(k1 red, k3 black) repeat from * around
Row 22: *(k1 black, k1 red) repeat from * around
Row 23: k2 black *(k1 red, k3 black) repeat from * to last two stitches, k1 red, k1 black
Row 24: knit around in red, break red

Continue in straight stockinette stitch in black until hat is 9” from cast-on edge or until it is “big enough.”

One more red stripe and decreases for crown:
Row 1: join red, knit around in red
Row 2: slip first stitch, knit around in red, break red
Row 3: knit around in black
Row 4: slip first stitch, knit around in black
Row 5: *k8, k2tog, rep from * (72 st)
Row 6: knit around
Row 7: *k7, k2tog, rep from * (64 st)
Row 8: knit around
Row 9: *k6, k2tog, rep from * (56 st)
Row 10: knit around
Row 11: *k5, k2tog, rep from * (48 st)
Row 12: knit around
Row 13: *k4, k2tog, rep from * (40 st)
Row 14: knit around
Row 15: *k3, k2tog, rep from * (32 st)
Row 16: knit around
Row 17: *k2, k2tog, rep from * (24 st)
Row 18: knit around
Row 19: *k1, k2tog, rep from * (16 st)
Row 20: knit around
Row 21: *k2tog, rep from * (8 st)
Row 22: *k2tog, rep from * (4 st)

Break yarn and draw through 4 remaining stitches twice, pull snug and weave in ends to finish.

Embroider kanji (or whatever you like!) with red yarn, using a daisy-chain stitch and yarn needle.

I vote for photos of Dave modelling it! I also like reading all the secret and unintelligible secret knitter's code.
